Where water gets in
- Missing or lifted shingles and cracked tiles.
- Failed flashing around chimneys, vents and skylights.
- Clogged gutters that back water under the roof edge.
- Window and door seals that have shrunk or cracked.
- Gaps in siding, stucco cracks and failed caulking.
What to do when water comes in
- Catch the water with buckets and move belongings out of the way.
- Poke a small hole in a bulging ceiling over a bucket to relieve the water, if it is safe to reach.
- Get the opening covered with a tarp or board-up.
- Photograph everything for your insurer.
- Have the attic and walls checked for wet insulation and framing.
